John Scopazzi – Board Chair
John Scopazzi is a licensed and insured general contractor and owns Scopazzi Construction where he has led successful projects in Marin for over 25-years. With his wife Lisa, John also owns and runs two local businesses in Sausalito, Five Stars Yacht and Sausalito Bike Return. As a boat captain, John maintains a USCG 100 Ton Master Captain’s License. John serves on the Sausalito Business Advisory Committee and is an active member of the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce and San Rafael Rotary Club. His love for the water comes from his Italian grandfather who migrated to America from Italy in the early 1920’s. Growing up near the Santa Cruz coast, John’s grandfather taught him to fish on a small boat, igniting his passion for the water. Leading the Sausalito Community Boating Center as board chair, John is excited to launch the construction phase of the project and provide opportunities to get people excited and on the water, similar to how he found his passion in a small boat with his grandfather.
Raylene Gorum – Board Member & Secretary
A Bay Area native, Raylene Gorum studied architecture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and in Paris with special studies in New York City, London and Spain. She now focuses these skills toward creating large-scale public art installations. She recently relocated to California and bought a houseboat in Sausalito after selling a popular singing bar, Baby Grand, that she designed, owned and operated in Soho, NYC with her husband. She supports her waterfront community as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner appointed by the City of Sausalito, as a volunteer at Willow Creek Academy, as a member of the Board of Directors with the Sausalito Community Boating Center and through collaborations with Sausalito Beautiful and her live-aboard community at Galilee Harbor.
Mary Gidley – Board Member
Mary and Cass Gidley established the original “Cass’ Marina” sailboat rental and school in 1960, as part of an extensive commercial fish operation on the old Napa Street Pier. Mary and Cass lived and raised their children on the Bay aboard the classic wooden sailboats, the Tia Mia and the Yo Ho Ho. The Gidley family did extensive international cruising in the off season. Mary is retired from a teaching position at College of Marin, and retains her passion for wooden boats and the sea. Mary’s son Memo, and daughters Lupe and Sharon, share her enthusiasm for this project.
Paul Moe – Board Member
Paul lives in Mill Valley with his wife and two sons. At the age of 13, he had his first “Huckleberry Finn” raft that he cobbled together with shoreline driftwood. He explored the shoreline of Richardson Bay with his friends and fell in love with the marine environment. Since then, he has owned several boats, has been a California National Park Services lifeguard and Park Ranger along the Marin coast, and is a licensed general building contractor. He is a “chronic volunteer” and has served in several board commissions and advisory committees, including recreational, medical, and municipal services. He feels that the SCBC has a very strong and dedicated group of volunteers and board members and is thankful to be a part of the organization. Paul strongly believes in the organization’s mission of making our waterfront more accessible and affordable for the public and he has high hopes for the future of SCBC.
Annette Russell & Mike Dumont – Board Members
Annette Russell & Mike Dumont are the dynamic husband and wife duo on the Board, representing a wide variety of skills. They moved to a boat in Sausalito for a change of scenery from San Francisco in 2019, and that decision led them to fall in love with Sausalito’s waterfront community. They’ve since managed to set down roots on land, and can usually be found in or near Sausalito’s waterfront, sailing with Club Nautique, playing bocce in the town league, and enjoying the paddle boards at the Sausalito Cruising Club.
Annette is a lifelong proponent of outdoor activities, volunteerism, education, and being on the water. She’s currently the Senior Nursery Manager at the Presidio Nursery with Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy where she and her team connect with the community while cultivating plants. Annette also volunteers as a co-supervisor on a harbor seal rehabilitation crew at the Marine Mammal Centers.
Mike is our tech guru with an eye for streamlining systems and making different functions all work together. He’s also an avid sailor working toward his captain’s license and preparing to sail across the Atlantic in late 2023.
Nick Moe – Intern
Nick is the very first intern for the Sausalito Community Boating Center. He is a Community Studies student within the Sociology department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is working with the SCBC as part of his full-time field study for school, which is an experiential-learning program that focuses on community development, social justice, and health equity. Nick and his family are long-time Marin locals who love the area and enjoy giving back to the community. He has helped organize the Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade for several years and has worked at a number of local businesses in and around Sausalito and Mill Valley. He also has a decade of general construction experience from working with his father Paul, who is also a volunteer for SCBC. When Nick is not working at the site you can find him hiking on Mount Tam, painting in his backyard, or exploring San Francisco with his friends.
